IoT, Venture Capitalists

In the past few years, more and more smart and Internet-connected devices have come into the mainstream. The Internet of Things (IoT) has become a part of everyday life for many people, which is why venture capitalists have continued to invest in the sector. 2017 saw the highest venture capital investment in IoT startups ever, at $1.46 billion. That number was up 42% from 2016 and there seems to be no end in sight for IoT growth.

One reason venture capitalists may find this trend so intriguing is that the possibilities for the technology’s application are nearly endless. From companies that make devices to track your lost keys to those that use AI for healthcare services, innovators are coming up with ingenious ways to apply IoT technology and many venture capitalists are happy to fund them.

Mark Attanasio, co-founder of Toronto-based merchant bank Hillcrest Merchant Partners, notes that, “given globalization, using technology has become virtually mandatory,” which is another reason why investors are so keen to fund emerging IoT technology. No one wants to be left behind. By increasing productivity, redefining relationships, and building new business models, IoT has the potential of putting those who use it (and invest in it) ahead of competitors.

While the Internet of Things has been around for a while, one relatively untapped market is industrial IoT. Asset-heavy markets like the agriculture, manufacturing, and oil industries have increased their efficiency and saved money thanks to IoT technologies.

Adrian Fortino, a partner at early-stage venture capital firm Mercury Fund, explains: “We’re trying to solve a couple of big challenges within industrial Internet adoption, such as inoperability and security. If those two challenges are beginning to be solved in a more scalable broader, larger way, we will start to see an even bigger explosion.”

The intertwined relationship between entrepreneurs and venture capitalists will be crucial to pushing forward new IoT technologies. As IoT continues to expand in ways that only the most innovative among us could have imagined, they will need the continued support of venture capitalists.
