A lot of people assume that when something goes wrong with your car, you need to take it is a mechanic. This is particularly true for people who have limited skills with mechanics. However, there are actually a number of car repairs that you will be able to do on your own regardless of the skills that you have. You simply need to know what they are, how to identify them and the terms you need to know which will help you understand any tutorials.

Replacing Your Drive Belt

One of the car repairs that you can do yourself is to replace your drive belt. The drive belt is the rubber belt in the engine which connects the pulleys of the engine. The belt will be located at the front of the engine and will need to be replaced regularly.

You can tell if your drive belt needs to be replaced by listening to the noises that your car makes when you start it. If the car squeals when you start it, you could have a problem with your drive belt. You should complete a visual inspection of the drive belt before you replace it and look for any cracks, looseness, and wear. If you are not hearing noises, but your visual inspection shows belt being work, you need to replace it. If the belt is loose, you can tighten it up instead of replacing it.

If you are going to be replacing your drive belt, you need to know some terms to help you with this. The pulleys are the small wheels that the drive belt wraps around. They are attached to the engine and when the belt moves, they will provide power to the systems they work with. The tensioner pulley is different as it helpers the other pulleys work correctly by allowing you to adjust the tightness of the drive belt.

The serpentine belt is the name of the main drive belt in many of the newer model cars. These belts will wrap around a number of systems instead of only one. You can easily find them online at a Wholesale Auto Parts company.

Replacing Your Brake Pads

Many people do not realize that their brake pads are something that they can easily replace themselves. You do not need a lot of special equipment and most of the equipment you do need is part of your basic car repair kit. The best way to tell if you need to replace your brake pads is the noise your car makes when you brake.

If your car squeals when you apply the brakes, your brake pads may need to be replaced. However, this noise can also occur when the pads are very cold so testing this first thing in the morning during winter is not a good idea. If you hear a grinding sound instead when applying the brakes, your rotor will need to be replaced instead of the brake pads. In these cases, you should take your car to the mechanic for this as it is a more advanced car repair.

To replace your brake pads, you need to know what the different parts are. The rotor is the main disc part of the brake system which the brake pads clamp into when you want to stop. The calipers are the part of the system that pushes the brake pads on to the rotor to slow down your car. These 2 parts of the car are ones that you do not want to touch when you are starting your car repair journey.

Replacing Your Battery And Alternator

A lot of people think that replacing your battery is the easiest repair to do, but you have to be careful with this. You also need to understand that the alternator could be the problem and that you can easily replace this yourself as well. These 2 items are what you should look at when your car is not turning over and none of your accessories are powering on.

You can test both the battery and the alternator with a multimeter to see if they are dead. If one of these parts is not measuring enough energy, you will need to replace it. You can often get a jump start to provide some energy, but you should still replace these items.

Everyone knows what the battery of the car is and what it looks like. The alternator is different, and this is the device that works with the battery to provide power to your car. This will always be located at the front of the engine and will have a belt connected to the front of it.

Fix An Exterior Coolant Leak

Fixing an exterior coolant leak may sound daunting, but it is something that you can do regardless of your mechanical skills. To determine if this is a problem, you should look for pools of yellow, green or orange liquid on the ground after you have been driving. This liquid will be antifreeze and if you are lucky, it is coming from a crack or hole in one of the exterior hoses in your car.

To check this, you will need to pop the hood as soon as you stop the car after driving. You should look for any liquid, the same color as the pool, which is leaking from a plastic piece or hose. You should not touch anything as the parts will be hot, but if you see a leak you will be able to fix this. All you will need to do is unclamp the leaking hose and replace it with a new one. If you cannot find the leak, the problem could be your radiator and you should see a mechanic for that.

When looking to replace a hose, you need to be aware that they are usually attached with worm gears and spring clamps. They are also made of rubber which will often start to crack over time. The hose will be attached to the radiator which is the large part in front of your engine which is in charge of keeping the engine cool while it runs.
