Five Things That Will Keep Your Home Secure On The Outside

When discussing home security, a lot of people only think about the inside of their homes. They’ll secure the door, they’ll put surveillance cameras and an alarm system indoors, and they’ll think that they’re done. However, this is not quite the best train of thought.

If someone is casing your place for a burglary, the first thing they’ll do is case the outside. If they find that the outside is secure, they’ll know that the inside is secure, too, and they’ll give up. This is something that a lot of people seem to neglect.

So, if you’re one of those folks who don’t want to neglect it, where do you begin with the outside? What are some devices that will keep your home secure on the outside? Let’s find out.

Smart security cameras

A security camera is always the core of a home security system. However, they shouldn’t only be placed on the inside, but on the outside, too. This way, you’ll know what’s happening outside.

Now, for the outdoors, you don’t want just any camera, you want a smart camera that has motion detection and can send alerts to your phone. Such a camera can tell you when something is happening, and you’ll be able to instantly connect to it and see who or what the perpetrator is.

To add to that, such a camera on the outside is usually pretty visible. As far as letting potential burglars know that your home is secure, a surveillance camera on the outside is a great way to do so.

Contact sensors

We aren’t talking about conventional motion sensors, contact sensors are a bit different. They come in two pieces and are installed on doors and windows. You can have them on your yard gate, pool gate, and all the doors and windows of your home.

They work with magnets. As long as the two pieces are next to each other, everything is okay. If a window or door is opened, the magnets move further from each other, and you’ll get an alert on your phone that this is happening. This should be a sign that someone unauthorized may be trying to get into your home.

Smart lighting

Smart lighting is another thing that people tend to use only indoors. We get it – you’d rather yell at Alexa to turn off the lights than stand up and do it yourself, and that’s why smart lights exist. However, this is far from their only use.

They’re very useful on the outside, too, especially if you were to pair them with motion sensors, or cameras that have a motion sensor. If this happens, not only will you get an alert that someone is outside your home, but the smart lights will turn on automatically.

Burglars who are casing your home actually count on darkness to keep them concealed, and they don’t want to be in the spotlight. However, with smart lighting on the outside of your home as part of your home security system, you’re putting them in the spotlight, and that’s an easy way to scare them away.

Smart garage door opener

Another one in the line of smart devices, the garage door opener can help you protect everything you store inside your garage, and your home if the garage has a door that leads there. Chances are you’ve left the garage door open quite a few times, especially in those hot summer months where you’re DIYing things all the time and leave the tools exposed.

With a smart opener, the first thing that’s going to happen is you’ll get an alert that you’re away from home, but your garage door is open. Now, the first thing that springs to mind is to turn back and close it. But no, all you have to do is press a button in the app, and the door closes itself, regardless of where you are. Neat, right?

Doorbell camera

The last thing we’d advise if you want to keep things safe on the outside is a doorbell camera. When someone rings it, you don’t have to get up – you just grab your phone. If you pick one that has a motion sensor, you’ll get a notification before they ring, too.

You can not only have a live video feed of what’s happening outside the door, but you can listen, and with two-way audio, talk to the person outside. Best of all? You don’t even need to be home, you can do so from anywhere in the world, as long as you’re connected to the internet.

With a doorbell camera, you will not only deter burglars when you aren’t even at home, but they can help you stay away from door-to-door salesmen – nobody likes them anyway.
